Jochen Schwezer (from here on I will use Jochen) a company who hail from Munich in Germany use Perl on their internal systems for a variety of purposes. The main usage is a middleware system, built entirely in Perl, that they use to handle a broad variety of tasks. These tasks include, but are not limited, to:

  • transferring and converting data between systems (including exterior systems);
  • generating and sending email;
  • creation of PDFs;
  • providing web APIs to other systems;
  • providing an HTML/JS web interface to users;

The internal Perl system at Jochen is not left as a static base. It is actively maintained, improved and evolved by a modest team of eight Perl developers. Jochen encourages community participation and conference attendance and several of their developers can be seen at YAPCs and Perl workshops. Jochen's commitment to staff and community sees them providing the time and paying for the participation of their staff at these events.

Jochen is primarily aimed at German speakers, as evidenced by their website. If you don't speak German you can still visit the site using an automatic translation from within your browser (using tools like Google Translate) so that you can get an idea of what they provide. Jochen gives it users and the community of followers to its services the ability to purchase 'experience events' and to look at the cheapest available event.

The original focus of the site follows the interests and history of their founder and Managing Director who was, and still is, an extreme sports enthusiast and participant. He also holds several world records, some of them current, has been named as the first person to attempt a variety of extreme events and other assorted awards.

Aside from their website Jochen have a Facebook page and community, have a site on Google+, an instagram feed, a twitter account and a growing presence on YouTube. You can email them at info(at)jochen(hyphen)schweizer(dot)de.
