FLOSSUk Barcamp Birmingham

Afterwords

Tom and I attended the FLOSSUK Barcamp in Birmingham last Saturday. I was there partly as a member of the organising team and partly to do some work on FLOSSUK infrastructure in a different location. I was also acting as a chauffeur and companion for Tom who was busy recording and, as it happens, also presenting.

The ‘as it happens’ is mostly down to the nature of Barcamps and the nature of Tom. A barcamp is a fluid and reactive environment. The attendees make up the format and the flow of events as the day progresses. On this particular camp two of the subjects that were discussion pieces were within Tom’s frame of experience and so he stepped in and gave a Q&A session to help people. The nature of Tom is that he steps up to a challenge if he can overcome it and seems very confident when he does.

For my part I managed to achieve the work on the infrastructure I needed to update and I also managed to join in with the discussions and listen to the talks.

On the whole it was a great day. Unfortunately the numbers were once again low. A number signed up but there were a lot of no-shows on the day. We can probably lay blame at the feet of the recently held general election for a couple of the. Though I feel that I may have inadvertently changed the dynamic by putting an early start time without mentioning that people can turn up late as the day is loosely managed and has a natural rhythm.

However that doesn’t take away from the fact that there were great talks and great attendees. Thanks to all who turned up and participated. There are images and a video below for you all to enjoy.
